Effect of Postharvest Application of Chitosan and Wax , and Ethylene Scrubbing on the Quality Changes in Stored ¢¥ Tsugaru ¢¥ Apples

Abstract
Several postharvest treatments including ethylene scrubbing, waxing, and chitosan spray were examined to find out an effective method for extending the shelf-life of ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ apples. Ethylene scrubbing in storage atmosphere effectively reduced weight loss. Weight loss inside ethylene scrubbed atmosphere was found to be approximately half of those stored in conventional storage. Waxing of high molecular weight chitosan (average MW 500,000) spray was effective on keeping firmness under ethylene scrubbing environment but no clear effect was found when ethylene was not removed. Residual effect of ethylene scrubbing remained regardless postharvest treatments even after exposure to simulated marketing temperature. Because the acidity of chitosan did not adversely affect the appearance of fruit, postharvest application of chitosan seemed to be an effective agent on keeping freshness of ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ apples in general. Thus, high molecular weight chitosan showed a potential as natural fruit coating material when waxing was not allowed.
